I’m sure many of you are aware of the recent release of “Dune 2,” which took the world by storm and collected over $630 million in box office sales. Not only was the movie popular but it was accompanied by a sandworm-inspired popcorn box that drew attention to the film and added yet another incentive to head to the theater and watch the movie. But was the movie worth watching on the big screen? Well, in short, yes. But consider some things before watching.
First, it is critical that you watch “Dune: Part One,” which was released in 2021. While many critics claim it is boring, shallow, and has a one-dimensional plot where nothing important really happens, without the context of this movie, one will be confused and won’t enjoy the central conflicts and plot points of “Dune: Part Two.” The background information is complicated and impossible to understand from a short synopsis of Part One. There are rivaling families, all ruled under a central emperor, all of which are fighting for control of the planet Arrakis, which has expansive spice fields, which is crucial in enabling interstellar space travel. Also, the whole concept behind the Bene Gesserits and a “messiah,” is complicated and is unwound in Part One.
Second, know that the movie isn’t some super deep commentary on modern society and is instead more of an action-filled movie that’s entertaining and has an engaging plot. It’s a great movie, though, in that it’s a science fiction film that allows room for thought and imagination. While you may not walk away from the film as a changed person, it’s an entertaining movie to talk about, and since it’s so popular, you’ll feel a bit lost if you don’t view the film.
Finally, and maybe the most important consideration you should make before viewing, is that the film is somewhat predictable and follows a common plot. From the outset, you sort of know where the whole thing is going and outside of a few surprises, the movie basically ends how one would expect it to and few curveballs are thrown at the audience.
With all this being said, I would really recommend watching just because it’s fun and entertaining to view but don’t have too high hopes because the acting is good and the cast is famous, but they don’t convey deep emotion or thought. Also, “Dune: Part Three” has been approved and is currently in the works, which provides even more incentive to watch the first two in the series. If it’s anything like Part Two, I’ll definitely make the trip to the box office to watch the film.
