We went on a mission, with a hungry disposition. It was the acquisition of much information to spread to the masses that motivated this accession. We did our best to honestly review the following sandwich shops: Zodiac Subs and Naked Lunch. By comparing the sandwich shops in terms of speed, price, taste, and atmosphere, we have found the best sandwich shop in Boulder. Without further ado, lets get it on;
Zodiac subs was at the top of our list. A ten minute drive – with traffic – brings you to a very small, but aesthetically pleasing restaurant. We were very hungry coming from school and had high expectations. We approached the only employee, with a few questions and our orders in hand. We ordered our sandwiches and asked if he liked working there. He threw a quick glance over at the owner’s wife in the back. His answer was quick, and rehearsed. “You could say I like working here.” The way his voice wavered made us believe perhaps he is being held at gunpoint (we hope you’re OK dude). Due to the fact this was the first restaurant we tried, we had lower expectations. We weren’t expecting a Michelin star restaurant, just a simple breaded snack. Boy were we surprised. All three of the people working there were standing still, looking at their phones or chilling in the back room. When we asked them if we could ask any questions; They said “We are really busy, can you come back when we first open next week.” We decided to give up and just wait for our heavily overpriced sandwiches. Ten minutes after ordering we finally got our sandwiches. The wait wasn’t too bad, however, they made us feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome. It seemed like we were a burden, not customers – we even tipped 20%, attempting to salvage the little bit of a relationship we could. Overall, Zodiac Subs was not worth the price or the wait or the hellish experience. We left feeling like the chick you kicked out of your dorm room after hooking up. Fortunately, the menu was extensive and the sandwiches were very good, and they had solid variety and many vegan/ vegetarian options, making it an enjoyable lunch. The experience knocked down any goodness harbored between the bready vessels. Suffice to say, we were a bit disappointed by the overall experience. Zodiac Subs seems like a small business struggling to compete in the restaurant industry, but good customer service doesn’t cost anything. The cheapest sandwich you can get is six dollars without tax. Not too bad. We realize that it’s likely more a takeout place, but, unfortunately, we have to place it last in the sandwich shop hierarchy.
Naked Lunch is a little bit of a drive – about 13 minutes – sitting just off Arapahoe in the middle of pretty apartment buildings. The restaurant was a nice size, enough space to sit and eat, but not uncomfortably large. They didn’t have a lot of choices on the menu but honestly that may have made it even better if you’re as indecisive as us. All the employees were very kind, even hand delivering our orders to us. They also had coffee which bumps them up even further. The bread to filling ratio was perfect. The bread was perfectly toasted and so delicious. Unfortunately, It was very pricey for the size of the sandwich. The wait was really short, only about three minutes but the food still tasted fresh. The atmosphere was calming and welcoming and overall very enjoyable. It is not super accessible to high schoolers without a car, but we 100% recommended going there, even though you will have to save up for months. Price was the biggest turn off, but at least we enjoyed ourselves.
Overall a strong start from our sandwich competitors, make sure you look for Deli Zone, Snarfs,and Organic Sandwich Company in next month’s edition of The OWL to get our final ratings.
Part two baby, yes we ate.
