Lynley Sylvan

Lynley Sylvan, Writer

Even though Lynley would rather sit in her bed speed-reading trashy romance novels all day, she is a junior at Boulder High, and this is her first year as a staff writer on the Owl. She is a member of the BHS Theater Board, Co-President of Women’s Empowerment Club, and an avid member of the choir program. Along with being an academic weapon within school, Lynley also loves to start paintings she never finishes, sing show tunes in her shower, and terrorize the people of Boulder with her bad parking. Lynley is obsessed with cinnamon ice cream paired with long, feminist rants on the beach, and you will never find her without her emotional support water bottle. She has also just recently discovered the magic of Taco Bell Baja Blasts and will be purchasing one after any minor inconvenience. Lynley has not written for a newspaper since elementary school, when she wrote a riveting article on all of the reasons that green grapes were indisputably better than red grapes.

As the year comes to a close, a few refrains echo around the halls. “It went by so fast.” We did it.” And, the most tragic, “I wish I did more.” The biggest piece of advice that seniors pass...

The social media exposure of Lunar New Year 2026 was an incredible example of how cultural appreciation has the ability to easily cross into appropriation.

Cultural Appreciation or Appropriation?

Lynley Sylvan March 27, 2026

Scrolling through my mid-February social media feed, I was peppered with videos different from my favorite creators’ usual content, all centered around Lunar New Year. The videos were encouraging me...

Popular 2016 trends like the infamous Snapchat flower crown filter have experienced a new resurgence: but is this all about trends or something deeper?

Put the Flower Crown Filter Down

Lynley Sylvan, Staff Writer February 18, 2026

“2026 is the new 2016.” We’ve seen it everywhere. All over social media, people are posting ombre hair, Starbucks frappuccinos, and throwbacks to big block eyebrows. King Kylie lipkits, Snapchat...

The Handmaid's Tale is an incredible piece of defiant literature, issued as a warning against oppression and government control. Ironic, then, that it is one of the many victims of government-encouraged book bans.

Banned Book Review: The Handmaid’s Tale

Lynley Sylvan, Staff Writer January 23, 2026

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a distinct, defiant, and culturally important dystopian novel, written as a warning against patriarchal authoritarian control. But, as the US government continually...

Jewish Student Connection has an incredible culture of connectivity that has strengthened the Jewish community within Boulder High.

Lynley Sylvan December 9, 2025

Fortified against a wave of globally-driven antisemitism, an inclusive and powerful space is present at Boulder High: Jewish Student Connection. Every other Thursday, Jewish and non-Jewish students alike...

Behind every perfectly organized Pinterest board is a deeper question: is it fueling creativity or creating insecurity? Does Pinterest hold more weight than we give it credit for?

Does Pinterest Foster a Culture of Comparison?

Lynley Sylvan, Staff Writer October 29, 2025

Sometimes, as I scroll through the beautifully shaped and aesthetically pleasing squares of Pinterest, I start to feel slightly sick; in seconds, my daily scroll through the curated squares becomes a swirl...
