As spring sports come to a close, the Owl likes to look back on the season’s sports teams and highlight their events and accomplishments. Many of these teams have been around for decades at Boulder High, with deep-rooted histories and traditions. A newcomer to the athletics program is the Boulder High Boys Volleyball Team, a joint team between Boulder High and Fairview.
The boys’ volleyball team was started just a few years back in 2022. Though the team is made up of students from both Boulder High and Fairview, this season’s varsity team is predominantly Fairview students. Calvin Harvey, ‘27, is the only Boulder High student on the varsity team. Although the junior varsity team does have a more diverse mix of Fairview and Boulder High students. The varsity boys are led by Jessica Ashton, who has coached the team since it began. As quoted by Team Captain Joey Wang, ‘26, “Jessica is a great coach, and she can really help you learn how to play.” The majority of the boys on the team have no prior volleyball experience beyond playing for Boulder High. For many newcomers, it’s their first time ever stepping onto the court; however, the environment created by coach Jessica and the team fosters a positive, inviting learning experience regardless of skill level. Wang elaborates, stating, “I mean, there’s no harm in trying, because there are so many people that it’s their first year playing, and they still make a difference on the team, which is great.” Wang has played on the team for the past four seasons and has no prior volleyball experience. His co-captain is Jake Wu (26). The overall energy on the team is high and full of excitement.
They work with joy and a competitive spirit. As described by Wu, this spring the team had set its sights on making the regional tournament, something that had never been done before in the program. The top 24-ranked teams in the division move on to regionals. The Panthers recently won their last two regular-season games against Riverdale Ridge (3-1) and Kennedy High School (3-0), securing a spot in the 2026 regional tournament. As of late April, they are ranked 22nd in the 5A Division. If they have strong results at the regional level, they may advance to the state tournament. Considering the team was started just a few years back, it is an impressive feat to have made it to regionals. As of late April, their record is 12-10, up from their 8-14 record in the 2025 season. Come and show support as the Panthers make their way through the 5A regional tournament!
