November 12, 2016 | 1-1 (13-12 Penalties) over Broomfield – State Championship
The 2016 Boulder Boys Soccer Team was one of Boulder High’s best sports teams of all time. Going into their state championship matchup against the Broomfield Eagles, the Panthers were 19-0, and had only allowed 12 goals all year, thanks to their star goalkeeper, Djibril Doumbia ‘19, a sophomore who would go on to play collegiately at San Diego State. Boulder had played Broomfield once earlier in the year, beating them 2-1 three weeks before. However, anything could happen in the state championship. In the 10th minute, Simon Julian, ‘16, the Panthers’ star winger, cut in on his right foot and buried a beautiful goal to give Boulder an early lead. The Eagles equalized early in the second half. Then the game stalled. Nothing of note happened for the rest of regulation. Or extra time. The state championship headed into penalties. The penalties were intense the whole way through. In the 11th round, it seemed like Broomfield had won, but the referee deemed that the Eagles’ keeper left his line early. Finally, in the 14th round, a save by Doumbia and a converted pen by Mitchell Graesser won the Panthers the state title. Boulder finished the season 20-0 and ranked second in the nation.

In the first round of the 2024 playoffs, the Panthers played against the Fountain-Fort Carson Trojans and absolutely dominated. Boulder was up 6-0 at the half, turning what was supposed to be a tightly contested playoff match into a trouncing. Xander Sevian ‘25, who would go on to play soccer at Clemson University, had a night to remember. He scored three goals and posed for post-game pictures with the Fountain-Fort Carson team, more in awe of Sevian’s skill than upset to be out of the playoffs.
