Girls Volleyball plays at the Boulder High gym most Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Despite some recent struggles, the team shows promise with a 4-7 record against stiff non-league competition (at the time of writing). The season extends through October, and the upcoming home games include October 14 vs Westminster, October 16 vs Prairie View, and October 23 vs Mountain Range.
In an interview with seniors Tessa Botha and Sloane Smith, the leaders gave us their thoughts on the team’s success. Tessa Botha ‘26 said, “The season is going better than it has in the past years, but we’re still working our way up to being the best we can.” Sloane Smith, ‘26, added, “We’ve definitely had some rough patches in the last few weeks, but you can really see our promise as a team. When we start playing our league games, I think we’re gonna do really well.”
Despite the promising young season, volleyball does not see many spectators. Volleyball plays in the gym at Boulder High, so potential spectators would not have to travel very far. Despite this and increased outreach on social media, the stands remain mostly empty. When asked about this, Sloane Smith, ‘26, had this to say: “I think a lot of it is because of reputation, like not winning many games, but this year that’s changed a lot, and we’re really fun to watch, so I think more people should show up.” The question of why attendance is so low is certainly a valid one. One perspective of why attendance is so few is the day it happens. Volleyball games usually happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students on these dates are much more likely to stay home with homework than if the games happened on, for example, Fridays. Still, Boulder High teams deserve Boulder High spirit. The school has some incredible fans and student-athletes. We should all make an effort to support each other and get Rowdy. Volleyball still has plenty of home games through October that we can show up and support. So go show up and show out.
If you need something to do next year, the volleyball team is a good choice. There are many valuable aspects to doing a school sport. For example, the commitment to a sport looks great on a college resume. It also counts as some P.E credit and builds strength and coordination. Volleyball specifically puts an emphasis on community and camaraderie. When asked why people should join volleyball, Tessa Botha ‘26 said, “It’s a really good community, and I’ve loved all the friendships I’ve made through it. It’s a really great community to be a part of.” It could also be a great chance for cross-training if you have a sport in the spring, as Sloane Smith ‘26 pointed out. “If you’re a multisport athlete, it can help so much to develop your muscles and skills.” This is perfectly exemplified by these two seniors, as Tessa is a star tennis player in the spring season, and Sloane is a standout member of the track and field team. Boulder High Volleyball is a good option for competitive players, cross-training athletes, or, as there is a Varsity, JV, and Freshman team, a student looking to get into school athletics.
