September Athlete of the Month, Marey Farrior, ‘25, is fairly new to field hockey. She began playing as a sophomore at Boulder High, in the team’s first year, making this her third year playing. Field hockey was first introduced to Boulder High in 2022 and struck immediate interest.
Because of the sports recent introduction to BHS and CHSAA rules, the team has had to be considered a JV level team for two years before even being considered a varsity level team. This year, the team qualified to be an official CHSAA varsity team! Because of this, Farrior was required to be a JV athlete for two years before finally becoming a varsity athlete this year.
Farrior plays right forward on the BHS girl’s field hockey team and says her role “consists of fast breaks up the side of the field and trying to score.” Along with her role of right forward, Farrior is also a team captain. In her position as captain, Farrior is expected to lead and unite the team at practices and games. Her goal as captain is “for everyone to be comfortable and friends with each other so we have trust when playing on the field.”
Farrior started playing field hockey after the sport became available at Boulder High when she was a sophomore. She says, “When it became a sport at Boulder High, I quit volleyball because I wanted to play a sport outside where I could run around a field and feel more active. My mom played in high school and urged me to try it because she thought I’d love it, and she was right!”
Farrior has found her passion in field hockey. She loves the fast-paced speed of the game and how eventful it is. She says the team is “super positive and growth-based.”
In their first year as a varsity team, the BHS girl’s field hockey team has found lots of success! This year, they made the state playoffs, playing their first playoff game on October 29th against Denver East. As of October 29th, the team has a winning record of 7-6-3. Farrior says, “our team has brought energy to all practices, and we go into each of our games with intention,” which is a big factor in their success this season.
Farrior has been a large part of the team’s amazing performance this season. So far this year, she has scored five goals and three assists. Her goal count is a personal best and has made her the team’s top goal scorer. Farrior says that her greatest achievement this season has so far been being the team’s top goal scorer. This amazing achievement led Farrior to be one of two athletes named Boulder High September Athlete of the Month. Farrior said she was “ super excited and honored to be named athlete of the month!”
Despite all of her personal success this season, Farrior is an incredible team minded athlete. When asked what her favorite moment playing BHS field hockey has been, she spoke about her teammate saying, “ My favorite BHS field hockey memory was Tenley scoring a goal with 5 seconds left on the clock to win a tied game.” Her team first mindset shows exactly why she was named as one of the captains this year.
Farrior says the most challenging part of the sport has been “playing teams that have been playing together since middle school because our team is so new and full of many different levels of background in the sport.” Despite the newness of the Boulder High girl’s field hockey team, they have built life-long friendships, learned new skills and found success in the sport!
As her field hockey career at Boulder High comes to an end, Farrior says, “ I would love to play field hockey in college at the club or intramural level, but I won’t commit to a college for field hockey.” Right now, Farrior is focusing on finishing out this season strong and cherishing her last moments on the team.
