With the new school year upon us, some panthers are choosing to express their personal style differently from others. While most of us have typically accepted sweatpants and pullover hoodies as the norm, many students are abandoning that notion and are choosing to put their most stylish foot forward.
One of these particularly well-dressed students shares his opinion on why people should dress up for class, student Henry Barrett ‘28 wears a full suit every day and carries with him a briefcase. When asked about his opinion on dressing your best at school, Barrett shares his take, “I believe that, if available, the person should dress as well as they can, and for the reason that it will bring a perspective manner to your own self, for multiple reasons. First off, you have to really take care of it, and second off, it will give to other people a message that you truly do care of being respected.”
Barrett’s choice to dress up is a bold one, but through his outfits, he hopes to inspire others to dress up and put their best foot forward every day. Barrett shares how he originally got into the style, “Well, in eighth grade it was essentially a snap, I always cared for the style, yet, I never had the gall to carry it out, until eighth grade, which gave me the opportunity to, so to speak.”
He also shares his opinion on the usefulness and practicality of his briefcase. “My briefcase, which I use as a daily occurrence in my education career, is extremely useful with its varying pockets and nooks. I have not gone a day, past February, without it containing my academic supplies. Thereupon, I conclude that a briefcase is more practical, moreover, fashionable than the average backpack. Thus the reason for that derives from the pockets and convenience of a true-to-blood briefcase which supports all carrying capacity needs.”
While Barrett’s style is unique, there are other like-minded individuals within the Boulder High community. Last year, the Fashion club was quite trendy, having a weekly turnout of about 20+ people. This year, the club is under new leadership, Serena Hunnicutt ‘26 and Madison Sanford ‘26, who are leading the charge on this well-known Boulder High club.
Everyone has their own story about how they got into fashion. Sanford shared her story with me: “I’ve been into fashion since I was a little girl, I just love clothes and I love styling things and I think it’s so fun, different fabrics, colors, all of that, it’s always been interesting to me. Coming to Boulder High, I didn’t know a lot of people, and so I wanted to make more friends and eventually later in my time at Boulder High we decided to go to fashion club, and I felt like it was an amazing opportunity for like-minded people.”
Hunnicut also shares her story, “I am a genuine fashion-obsessed person, I love clothes, we both buy way too many clothes. And I would say from a young age, my mom has always been like, you find something that looks so ugly but then you have a vision for it and make it something, and I just feel like I love doing that, and I’m already learning so much more about the fashion industry and I want to share my knowledge with the community.”
Sanford shares her ideas for the club, “We are thinking of doing a Back to School Thrift Day, like a clothing exchange for back to school. Where people bring their old clothes they don’t want, we did a similar thing last year and it was really fun.” Hunnicutt continues, “Then everyone can get rid of the stuff they don’t like and get the new stuff, and then we donate the rest.” This thrift day is a great example of sustainable fashion and students taking action to stay sustainable.
Some other activity ideas put forward by the club presidents include nail day, hair day and shoe days, focusing on specific aspects of fashion. Hunnicutt is excited about carrying on a fun and fabulous tradition, “Our favorite activity because last year we won, and it really inspired us to love the club is a halloween costume contest. Get excited!”
These students hope to inspire you to always bring your best self to school. So, going into the new school year, allow yourself to dress outside of the box and create your own personal, unique style. Wear what you want and use your creativity.
