Wrestling, the world’s oldest sport according to The National Wrestling Hall of Fame, is a celebrated sport at Boulder High School, amassing a small yet vocal parent and student section.
After hearing of the success of the wrestling team this year, I wanted to find out more about the sport. I attended a match on January 17th, 2024. While this match was long, I found it super interesting and impressive to see these athletes working hard and representing their school.
According to The National Wrestling Hall of Fame, “Wrestling, mankind’s oldest and most basic form of recreational combat, traces its origins back to the dawn of civilization.”
Theo Kabjian, ‘26, shares his passion for the sport, “My favorite part about the wrestling team is the community it builds and also just being able to learn more about the sport of wrestling.”
Although this sport is full of brutality and is quite gruesome, it is a safe and fun community for many of its athletes. Wrestler Abe Pomeroy ‘25, shares his favorite part of being a Boulder High wrestler, “My favorite part of being a wrestler at Boulder High is the team aspect — We all motivate each other and have a strong team bond. I also like the competitiveness of wrestling, as well as the individuality. Your results are a direct product of all the work you put in.”
According to Pomeroy, the team’s greatest strength is their mindsets: “We have been working on implementing better mindsets for when we’re out on the mat. I think it’s really made a difference in our team dynamic and our results.”
The Boulder High Wrestling team is taking strides to improve season to season, and Pomeroy says that the team has really improved from last year. “We’ve had both individual and overall team placements at tournaments and in duels.” Shares Pomeroy.
As this wrestling season comes to an end, the athletes of the Boulder High Wrestling team have big hopes for the next season.
