Girls with Balls is a cinematic masterpiece. Funny, scary, dramatic. Tim Burton is shivering in his loafers. Quentin Tarantino is crying himself to sleep, Taika Waititi is counting his days.
A 2018 film directed and written by Olivier Afonso and Jean-Luc Cano did not take the world by storm, unfortunately. It amassed an IMDb rating of 3.9/10 stars. Today’s society really can’t appreciate a true work of art. This humorous movie is perfect for any age. Except kids. And really old people probably. This masterpiece revolves around a French-Belgian girls volleyball team. The movie starts with the voice of an angel- our narrator. He sings a perfect song and sets the mood for the rest of the movie. Anticipation and consternation. Next we meet our volleyball team. It is clearly an intense game. Folks with clipboards who we are to assume are coaches for highly professional teams, walk around judging the ladies. I will not spoil who wins, but trust me, it’s the game of a lifetime. After this game they get back on the bus and begin the long drive back home. That’s when everything changes. The bus overheats. The ladies get out with their coach and begin fixing the car after taking a much needed break from one another. That’s when we spot some redneck looking men watching the chicks. Morgane, played by the talented Manon Azem, quickly sets herself as the antagonist. Egging on her teammates, picking on them, and all around being annoying. She is the first one to notice the odd atmosphere of the mountainous terrain they are driving through. Once they get the car working again it’s back to their petty arguments. After a long night, the audience is left in dread. Expecting the knife drop, the jumpscares. Suddenly, as IMDb states, some “degenerate humans” come across the ladies (and the coach, he really makes this movie better). This is when the movie really starts. I will not be spoiling anything else except that these girls will have to fight for their lives.
The only literary work of art fit to be compared to Girls With Balls is Hamlet. Themes of tragedy, incest, comradery, madness, and existentialism. It effectively develops the plot in an awe inspiring way, using humor and trepidation to capture the audience. It is a somewhat Lord of the Flies-esque film as well. Displaying themes of betrayal, fear, and valor, but instead of young boys, its teenage-ish girls- wow.
It is somewhat spooky but mostly funny. This movie NEEDS to be added to your “To Watch” list. It is streaming on Netflix but it is easy to pirate on 123Movies! Overall this movie will leave you screaming, laughing, and potentially crying. It is a masterpiece.
