This summer, Boulder High’s beloved football field, Recht Field, got a facelift. Along with the turf redo, came a new emblem to the center of the field. The BVSD logo. The simple blue and white logo has brought on some serious controversy, but is all the fuss really necessary?
Last year, Boulder High had a plain green field, there was never even a Boulder High logo. Boulder High’s Athletic Director and Vice Principal, Coach Bishop shared, “This year we moved to a branding for our whole district, every field is getting redone.”
Leo Vogeli, ‘26, the Statistician for the Boulder High Football team says, “It would’ve been much cooler to have the Boulder logo.” Alexandra Jacobo-Chavez, ‘25, shares the same opinion, “To be honest I don’t really like it just because the blue looks really ugly with the other two shades of green.” She continues, “It doesn’t really look good.” Olive Tromey, ‘27, tends to disagree with most other students, “I think it’s pretty cool, I don’t really know anything about football though.”
Although the change was under fire by many students and parents, there was really no way around this change. Bishop says, “It’s unfortunately not our field, it’s a district field.” he continues, “Ours [Recht Field] is a shared facility.” And we are not alone, Bishop says, “Broomfield is a shared facility, the one at Centaurus is also a shared facility.”
Because Recht Field belongs to the school district, it is shared amongst other BVSD schools. Bishop addressed the rumor that the field change was because of Fairviews’ use of our field, “The field is actually shared by Fairview, Justice, Boulder, and it’s an overflow for anybody else.” Along with the field change, the iconic bridge crossing over to Recht Field has been refreshed.
According to the BVSD Building for Student Success, this project had an overall budget of a whopping $15, 293,000. Bishop says, “The bond is a tax. So it’s voted on by the community, we’ve been fortunate in Boulder Valley to pass our bonds. Bonds kind of help with the construction and different things like that. There are different phases in the Bonds, so next summer, when y’all come in our building will look different because of the bond. So Bond is helping to pay for air conditioning and some remodeling of Boulder High.”
Although the field and bridge renovations have caused a bit of a stir-up, it was time for the redo. “These things only have a certain lifespan, like for the field there is a cushion underneath and as you play year-in and year-out the cushion goes down, and it’s kind of the same thing with the bridge the wood just started to wear and tear.” Says Bishop.
While there is a great deal of controversy surrounding the field logo, the change was necessary, the safety of Boulder High’s athletes was prioritized, and while it was pricey it was also imperative.
