Boulder High Student’s Arraignment Postponed to May
Editor’s note: The charges against this defendant were dismissed and the records in this case were sealed by a judge. As a result, The Owl has elected to remove the defendant’s name from this article.
A Boulder High student appeared in court at 8:15 Friday morning for his arraignment concerning his sexual assault allegations. Represented once again by defense attorney Mike Rafik and his partner Steve Jacobson, the defendant did not take the stand at any point during the 30-second proceedings. Instead, he sat beside his parents in the gallery while Rafik took the stand.
Rafik did not submit the student’s plea of guilty vs not-guilty and instead asked for more time to prepare. Rafik cited another preliminary hearing concerning a different round of sexual assault allegations against the defendant as the reason the defendant would benefit from submitting his plea at a later date. This hearing, which will be the defendant’s second preliminary hearing concerning sexual assault allegations this year, is set for April 2; it will be his first for which he is not tried as an adult.
The judge agreed to Rafik’s request for a later arraignment date and scheduled it for May 29 at 8:15 a.m. in the Boulder County Courthouse.
