Walking into the pottery room, you will be greeted with the faint smell of dust, gentle conversations, and the sound of the wheels whirring. And now, although students had grown accustomed to pottery teacher Ms. Villareal, this year, students will be greeted with a new, friendly face. Ms. Wilson, who has taught art at Boulder High School for years, has now taken on the role of the pottery and ceramics teacher, with a shockingly large background in ceramics.
Ms. Wilson tells us that she was a student teacher for pottery at Rocky Mountain High School, participating in their pottery program for a semester. She then moved to Louisville Middle School where she taught pottery for 11 years. Ms. Wilson graduated from CSU with an art education major, which she says is “basically a dual major… you have your education classes, and then your studio classes.” Within these studio classes, Ms. Wilson says, “My concentration was sculpture.” She took “a lot of ceramic classes, a lot of just general sculpture classes.” Here, Ms. Wilson also learned to cast metals and explore with other types of materials. Ms. Wilson mostly enjoys molded pottery, slip casting, and throwing on the pottery wheel, although she says that she can’t really pick a favorite kind of ceramics.
When asked how students can get more involved in the world of pottery and art itself she shares her wisdom: “Get out there and see what’s out there. Go to as many galleries and shows and things as you can. But, there are also a lot of places in our community that host amazing workshops.”
Ms. Wilson is continuing to carry on two adopted, larger pottery projects from Ms. Villareal: The Tree of Awareness, and Random Acts Of Kindness. Boulder High School also has an upcoming art show at the Boulder Public Library where ceramics students are working with students involved in photography and digital art.
Boulder High students can work to get involved in the art world, and can support their fellow panthers on their art journey by showing up to art shows at Boulder Library. You can also get to know Ms. Wilson better by going to Art Club to spend time on all sorts of art projects after school on Thursdays from 4:00-5:00PM.
Next time that you enter the pottery room, note all of the beautiful pieces being made. But also, make sure to greet Ms. Wilson as she continues her ceramics journey at Boulder High.
