For Mia DeJohn, ‘25, the 2025 soccer season will be one to remember. The Boulder High women’s soccer team began the season with a record of 6-0-2 – undefeated after eight games. This is the strongest start the team has seen in the seven years Coach Carlos Real has led the program. The team’s strong performance thus far was also reflected in their climb to the number one ranking in the state, an unprecedented achievement for the program.
DeJohn also officially signed to play Division 1 soccer at San Diego State University on April 9th. Despite these achievements for the program and for DeJohn personally, the thing that will make this season one to remember is the friendships she has made through the Boulder High Women’s Soccer Program.
A three year varsity player, DeJohn has been playing with the programs seven other seniors since her sophomore year. With this history comes strong bonds and an incredible team culture. DeJohn says “This is the best team environment I have ever been a part of, our team dinners, pregame locker room, and our away games are my favorite part.” She also said “My favorite memories with BHSWS are the times I spent with the team on and off the field.”
The positive team culture has no doubt played a large role in the teams success this year. DeJohn supports this sentiment saying, “I think our chemistry and hunger to win have led our team to success so far.” Along with the team chemistry, five out of eight of this years seniors have committed to play college soccer, showing the incredible talent of this years squad.
DeJohn’s college soccer recruiting process was no simple journey. Originally, DeJohn was committed to play division one at the University of Michigan. However, due to the NCAA lawsuit that occurred earlier this year, changing rules around roster sizes meant that DeJohn would have to recommit. After some time, DeJohn recommitted to San Diego State, where she will spend the next four years.
DeJohn’s commitment to play Division 1 soccer is a testament to her incredible work on the field. Her accolades wowed college coaches and led to what DeJohn calls the proudest moment of her soccer career, “signing to play soccer in college.” Her first two years on the varsity team, DeJohn scored seven goals and had eight assists. So far this season, DeJohn is the second-highest goal scorer on the team with four goals and two assists. Last year, she was selected to be a member of the Front Range League First Team, the highest honor for a High School soccer player. DeJohn was also selected for this team in her sophomore year.
So far this season, DeJohn’s proudest moment was scoring in the rivalry Boulder vs Fairview game to clinch the win. She says, “It meant the world to me to score the winning goal in the Boulder vs Fairview game, as we also beat them last year, making this the first time in many years that we have beaten Fairview twice in a row.”
As far as the rest of the season goes, DeJohn has big goals. Speaking to the fact that Boulder High Women’s Soccer hasn’t won a playoff game in seven years, DeJohn hopes to “go as far as we can in playoffs, making us the best team in BHSWS history.”
Personally, DeJohn wants to “assist and score as much as I can and just make a big impact on the field and leave a lasting legacy.” She also hopes to “be a leader on the field, contribute to everyone’s success.”
DeJohn’s legacy, to her wishes, is cemented in the program as she is one of the best players produced by Boulder High Women’s Soccer. Since 2018, only four players in the program have committed to play Division 1 soccer in college, and DeJohn is one of them.
Her incredible success aside, DeJohn says, “Soccer has brought me so much joy and competitiveness. It has added an extra purpose to my life, and I do not know what I would do without it.”
Boulder is buzzing with news of the Boulder High Women’s Soccer program’s success, and the season is far from done, with much of league play still remaining. This team is the best the program has seen in years. Go watch a game and view it for yourself!
