Amiya Vashi, ‘25, is a music star who attends Boulder High. She has been singing since she was seven but started writing and working on her original music for the past three years. Her music continues to evolve as she creates new pieces; her current vibe is, as she would characterize it, “indie-pop-folk.”
Amiya spends around two days a week writing songs, though she wishes she wrote more often. She says she doesn’t write as much as she would like to partly because “it’s so easy to get caught up in the minutia of life.”
As she has spent time working on her music over the past few years, she has been working with the same producer, Taylor. Taylor is one of Amiya’s biggest inspirations, as she says she has “Grown the most musically while working with her.”
The more she advances musically, the more she discovers what she loves to write about most. “I love elaborating on my own experiences, creating full-blown stories based on my day-to-day life,” she says. She explores love and managing complicated relationships through her everyday experiences in several of her songs. Sometimes, she admits, “[I] steal life experiences from my friends to write about,” though every time she does, she somehow makes sure to include them in the song, “usually through the album cover,” she says.
Amiya’s music deals with topics about her and her friends’ lives and sometimes entirely fictional scenarios; she captures the tragedy of losing someone you love in her most popular song, 3 States Away. A sad, soft piano accompaniment and her melancholy words and tone pull her listeners in and put them in her heartbreak.
This song happens to be Amiyas favorite of her original pieces; she says that this song was the first time she sat back, looked at her work, and thought, “Wow, this is actually kind of good.” Not only did she appreciate her work, but she was also able to pitch her song to several record labels. She was excited about this experience because she “received pretty good feedback, which was definitely a good confidence boost.” she says. The song now has over 10,000 streams on Spotify, which was an exciting achievement for Amiya. “just knowing that people listen to my music, people who I’ve never met, makes me feel like a real musician,” she says.
Writer’s block is the most known enemy for writers, and Amiya, too, falls victim to this problem. She says that writer’s block is probably her biggest struggle. Though she has the remedy, she says, “The only way to move through writer’s block is to just write.” However, she admits it can be very “mentally challenging when you feel stuck in a rut.”
As Amiya continues to make music, she plans to improve by working with others. “Collaboration is a great way to grow in any field,” she says. Music will stay a big part of Amiya’s life as she says there is a “good chance” she will go to college or a program that is surrounded by music; however, if not, she says that she “will continue to write and release music on my own.”
