This year the Girls’ Basketball team welcomed their new coach Tobin Skenandore, who says he’s “Not a typical basketball coach.” Tryouts took place during the week of November 12th, where twice as many girls as last year showed up, wanting to put their skills to the test. In the end, 12 made varsity, 10 made JV, and 10 made C team.
Coach Skenandore acknowledges that his first year will bring many differences from previous years so it’s time to “Embrace change.” He says this season they will “Take everything and leave nothing.” They played their first game on Tuesday, November 28, where varsity went home with a 53-47 win. Their next game is on December 19th at Arvada West High School, so make sure to show up and support your fellow Panthers.
Moving to Boys’ Basketball, they played their first game of the season on November 30th at Boulder High School, they played against Greeley with an 88-49 win. This year at tryouts 87 Panthers showed up.13 made varsity 13 made JV, 11 made C team, and 15 made D team.
Many of the boys on varsity have been at that level for 3 to 4 years. The boys varsity, Coach Smith, says “We want to continue to develop as basketball players and as men.”
During their first weeks as a team, the boys set their own goals for the season. Even though every payer sets individual goals, Coach Smith says it is important to “Continue to play as a team even through tough games. He says that another important goal throughout the entire program is “developing chemistry needed to become a truly great team”
The boy’s basketball team’s next game is on December 19th at Arvada West High School. Make sure that you are supporting your Panthers in this season. Sporting events like basketball games are a time when upper and underclassmen can come together to hang out and pack the stands. As of this year, “The players will be throwing candy at home games” so be there be loud get excited, and support your basketball team to help them dominate this season.
