The exact place where mountain biking originated is hard to pin down; however, at the moment, Colorado is ranked as the third-best state for the sport, with locations like Crested Butte, Grand Valley, and Durango containing great mountain biking trails. With over 1,000 trails in the state, it is no wonder that Boulder High mountain bikers are some of the best. “I love biking outside because it is so fun to be outside with people I love and getting to so many cool places,” says Owen Verner ‘26.
What makes Boulder High’s mountain bike team so special besides their skill, hard work, and dedication, is their teamwork. Even though the race is individual, Boulder High creates a community for the bikers allowing each person to grow as an individual athlete while supporting their teammates at the same time.
Many of the bikers on the team have been riding bikes since they were in diapers, Verner can “remember the time I broke my wooden strider when I was a toddler.” Now, he shares that his biggest challenge is balancing his biking with everything else he wants to do in life like school and other activities.
The team started the 2023 season in Frisco, they then raced in Steamboat, Leadville, and Eagle where they qualified for state. Each race this season started at 8 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m., but that isn’t all! The day before each race, the bikers do their pre-ride to prepare. Boulder High mountain bike team finished out their season at states on October 21st and 22nd in Glenwood Springs, where they finished in 5th place. All though the season might not have ended how the team wanted it to, lots of growth and fun times took place during the 2023 mountain bike season.
