This month the Boulder High School Boys golf team finished 2nd place for state. Three of our players qualified; Doug Holleman (24), Boden Wrenn (25), and Sam Skubic (23). This is the second year in a row the team has performed this well, prior to these past two years of success the last time they did this well was in 2013. “What makes this year especially special is that we have back-to-back State qualifying teams,” said coach Russell Selnau. “And we did so with 3/4 new players on Varsity.”
Over 30 boys tried out for the golf team this year however only 20 got in, even having 20 players is a lot compared to many other teams in the state who generally have 11-15 players. Of these 20 boys on the team there are 4 spots for varsity, however there is ongoing competition for the varsity team that any player can move up to if they are playing well. Golf is big in Boulder, we have many fields that provide players of all ages to practice, however there are no club teams for youth so for many, highschool golf is their first opportunity to play in a more serious setting.
Golf, though somewhat physical, is more of a mental game. On the more physical side players spend their time on the feilds working on their putts and hitting. Aside from the physical portion each player must not only focus on what they need to work on specifically but also be a team player. Sam Skubic, freshmen state qualifier explains, “I chose golf because it is relaxing and an individual sport. I love how golf is individual and every mistake is an error by yourself and no one else.” Golf allows these boys to challenge themselfs to not only improve their playing on a personal level but also help their teammates improve as well. Russell Selnau describes what makes these athletes stand out, “Their attitudes and selfless nature during practice and tournaments. It is very easy for your frustrations over a bad shot to take over, but they always stay composed.”
They went to state on October 2nd, “Unfortunately all of our tournaments take place on weekdays, so cheering on these athletes is difficult for students.” Coach Selnau expresses. Next season make sure to support the boys golf, take the time, grab some friends and go watch a game!
