- Pale Jay
With over 1M monthly listeners on Spotify, Pale Jay’s blending of modern synth tracks with traditional instrumentation make him stand out among others in the contemporary R&B scene. The inspiration for his first album came from listening to jazz music while drifting between states of consciousness and unconsciousness, bringing a dreamy feel to his music which prompted Fairview senior Katie Teaford to say “damn, that’s a vibe,” while listening. His recent album Bewilderment saw a more extensive use of classical strings and more distinct drum parts – “In Your Corner,” being a particular standout on the record. Pale Jay is worth checking out if you enjoy low intensity modern music.
- Capital STEEZ
Many may know Capital STEEZ for his work on Joey Bada$$’s “Survival Tactics”. Though often overlooked, this song is more reminiscent of Capital STEEZ’s style than that of Joey Bada$$. Fitting into the Jazz Rap genre, Capital STEEZ’s most recognized album AmeriKKKan Korruption utilizes samples from celebrated artists such as MF DOOM. Already thoroughly enjoyable, Politically charged lyrics add additional interest to songs such as “Free the Robots.” Capital STEEZ puts a modern spin on old school 90’s styles by mixing samples of old tracks with his own as well as giving performances similar to other rappers of the 2010’s. Fans of instrumental hip-hop will definitely want to check out Capital STEEZ’s archive on Spotify.

- Cookin Soul
Cookin Soul is a highly active producer on the hip-hop scene, constantly putting out new singles. He gives many of his tracks a very modernized feel, sounding polished and clean. His 2021 album Good Job hosts features from Freddie Gibbs and Mac Miller, both of whom are wonderfully complemented by Cookin Soul’s producing style. His new Album Whateva Vol. 5 is actually a deviation from the shiny, rambunctious feel of Good Job in favor of a more laid back sound. While still being a strong album in its own respect, this takes away somewhat from what makes Cookin Soul unique. However, overall Cookin Soul is a fun artist that anyone who produces beats in their room can admire.
